Hi everyone, hope all is good. I wanted to come back and talk to you all about what’s been new with me this past couple of weeks. If you follow me on Instagram and Snapchat you probably have an idea of my schedule by now (work, work, work along with blog prepping). This weekend had to be one the busiest weekend I had in a very long time. My Saturday started with shooting new looks for the blog as well meeting some of my girls out for a birthday party later that evening. Sunday however, was a bit intense even for me, I woke up and headed to brunch with a friend, followed by taking more pictures, before heading to the mall. After the mall, I returned home for a breather before stepping out again for a blog collaboration meeting (which I am excited to share the details of in the next few weeks). As you can see much of the weekend was spent working and perfecting my craft. But I did sneak in a last minute pizza date with the ladies to close the rest of Sunday off—–Who doesn’t love PIZZA?!!!
I want to close this blog post up by sharing some fun positive tips to get you through this last week of November—Lord knows I need all the positive vibes I can get this week. Check out the tips below courtesy of “The Happiness Project”.
Enjoy your week loves. xoxox
Five Positive Tip:
Take time to be silly
Act more energetic (even when you don’t feel it)
Ask for help (I struggle with this one all the time)
Follow me on Instagram as Meyahw for more fashion looks and funny Insta stories.
Welcome back to the Selfish Column everyone, hope you all had a great weekend. This week I wanted to talk you guys about something kind of dear to my heart and the reason why I started my blog. As many of you know by now I love the concept of self-love and independence. If you have been following this blog for awhile now, you would have come across me referencing a book called “The Happiness Project” by Gretchen Rubin. When I first purchased the book almost three years ago to be exact, I really didn’t know what I was going to get out of it. The title was enticing. The first few pages really grabbed my attention and I was hooked from there. The book is about a woman (Gretchen Rubin) who decided after years of being married and having kids, was to find ways to work on the current challenges in her life in hopes it would improve her happiness. The book took you through her journey in which she set goals for herself each month and by the end of it, she calculated her accomplishments to see if this project had improved her overall happiness. I actually don’t want to give the ending away because I feel as though each person entering adulthood or even those still figuring out “adulting” should read it. I felt like this book changed my perspective as a young woman and ultimately helped me launch my blog ,”The Selfish Column”. Soon after completing the book, I asked a really good friend of mine to help set up a blog and a platform. It was with his support and encouragement that really assisted me in going for my dream. David you rock!!!!
The first few pages of the book Gretchen made a list that really stood out for me and I thought I should share with you all. The list was called, “Secrets Of Adulthood”. Now I am not going to give the whole list away but rather share the steps that stood out for me the most. Hope you enjoyed this post and find it helpful in starting your own projects whatever it may be. Below are five keys things I found helpful from the book.
Secrets of Adulthood:
People don’t notice your mistakes as much as you think.
Most decisions don’t require extensive research.
By doing a little bit each day, you can get a lot accomplished.
It’s okay to ask for help.
Happiness doesn’t alway make you happy.
If you got this far on the blog, thank you, thank you, thank you. The support is much appreciated . Special thanks to my friend David for helping me out in my journey and The Happiness Project for being my personal guide through young adulthood.
Welcome back fellow “selfishers” (lol) see what I did there. Hope everyone had great Canadian Thanksgiving. A few of my gal pals and I had an amazing time celebrating our version of Thanksgiving, something I will discuss in the near future.
I wanted to come back to you all with one of my traditional style known as “The Lazy Girl Fashion”. By now it’s no surprise to many that I love minimal dressing that can transition easily throughout the day. This current look is something I put together with items already in my closet. For my girls that are on a budget such as myself, always remember to shop your closet before running out and spending your money. The Jeans you see on are from Garage (which I absolutely LOVE and adore by the way) have already made a feature on the blog this past summer. Let me know what you think of the look and enjoy your weekend everyone.
Hello everyone and welcome back to The Selfish Column. I really hope everyone had a great weekend. I spent the weekend working on future blog posts and organizing my school life.
This week I am coming to you guys with a new look that I absolutely love! This outfit is giving me a sexy Morticia Addams vibe, and I’m here for ALL IT— Bring on the dark side. I can wear this look to so many events without the feeling of outfit repeat hanging over me. The different pieces make for an easy style change with things you already have in your closet. This is something you can wear to a business event or a night out with the girls (of course the button have to be up for work events). I want you guys think business in the front and party in the back analogy, only this time the party is taking a front row seat with this eye catching bralette.
Let me know how you would incorporate these three pieces into your wardrobe.
As always the details are listed below. Like, share, and comment if you love this post.
1. Open a separate email account for all your shopping needs.
Let’s be honest everyone wants a good deal while shopping, but sometimes that deal comes in an email form. It can be difficult to filter through your personal emails and all those daily emails from your fav brands. I’m not the one to miss out on a good deal —so one day I decided to open a separate account to provide to all my fav stores and brands while shopping.
2. Cooking in foil is an easy way to cook for one.
This is perfect for the person living on their own and is constantly on the go. Pick your choice of protein (beef, chicken or fish) add your fav veggies and let the oven do the rest.
3. Always keep a staple black pump in your car.
Last minute invitations to events can have you rushing home to change or cancelling due to time constraints. Having a pair of black pumps can change the status of your outfit from day to night without having to miss out.
4. Always keep a small amount of cash on you.
I know we live in the age of technology and plastic money, but it doesn’t hurt to have real cash on you. I tend to leave a small amount at home just in case I lose my wallet or need to get a taxi home. I know I’m thinking of the worst case scenario here, but it’s always better to think ahead.
5. Have a general cover letter saved in your email.
As young adults we often find ourselves in positions or jobs not related to our career path. The best way to ensure you are always ready for the next step is by having a BOMB cover letter highlighting your skills without overshadowing the purpose of your resume. Even the most simple position should always get a cover letter.
If you got this far I want to say thank you, let me know your thoughts on these hacks and and share some of yours in the comment sections.
Hi everyone and welcome back to The Selfish Column. Hope everyone had great weekend doing whatever it is they love. Mine was pretty standard for the most part. I did a little bit of shopping, editing and went to one of my girlfriend’s birthday dinner. All and all it was a delightful weekend.
The outfit seen a above was quite simple to put together. As many of you all know by now I am the queen of lazy looks. I love to put pieces together that don’t need much to standout. When I first purchased this white dress I was a little hesitant because I wasn’t sure where I can wear it. After bringing it home I started to play around with the belt hook on the dress and quickly learned it can be worn in many ways. For example if you want to have a more conservative look, all you had to do is tighten the belt hook. If a sexier look is what you’re going for just loosen the belt hook and maybe go bra less if you are brave enough. Just tape those bad boys down to avoid some unwanted attention… (if you know what I mean). Another great way to wear this piece is abandoning the the dress idea and use it as a sleeveless vest. Hope you liked these tips, and enjoyed my look today. On Wednesday I will be writing about fun life hacks, hope to see you all back here.
Hi there my selfish readers, hope you all had an amazing weekend. My weekend consisted of wine, girl talk, and work. The look above I put together with the idea of a simple date night on the mind. The floral patterns on the blazer pieced the look together without overshadowing the lace pattern on the dress. Speaking of the of this LBD, I had this in my closets for months but never got around to wearing it. Let me know your thoughts on it and how you would style it if it was your dress. Thanks for stopping by!
(This is actually a necklace that I wrapped as a hand chain)
Hi everyone, welcome back to the blog. This week I am talking about investing in your appearance. As women, we often find ourselves in the midst of so many products with little to no glue on how to use them to perfection. I am here to tell you there is no need to spend hours when getting ready, instead take one thing you love about your appearance and invest in it. I am going to be honest, I never caught the makeup bug… in fact if you see my collection you would feel sorry for me. I’m what you call a ten minute girl. Meaning if it takes more than ten minutes in the morning, I don’t want to be a part of it. As you can tell by the picture above I’m probably going to talk about my nails. Nails have become such a big part of my identity. There is something powerful about having fresh painted nails before heading out. Even on my worst days I feel my best when my nails are painted. I learned quickly I don’t have be a ten from head to toe to feel my best, instead I just have to find something I love about myself and master it. I’m fortunate enough to have nails that are naturally long which comes in handy when I go to the salon (20 bucks is all I need for shellac). Below I listed 5 steps in which I discuss how take care of your nails.
Even if they are strong give them a trim once in awhile.
Shaping your nails square is the best way to keep them strong.
Use gloves when you wash dishes (LOL my African would probably crack jokes on me for this).
Get a real manicure every time a new season comes around (unless you have the time).
Paint your more dominated hand first, it allows you to feel confident even if the nail polish is wet when you start painting your other hand.
Hope you enjoyed this little short post, see you all soon.
It’s the weekend, and were talking about casual fashion looks today on the blog. This current look was inspired by Californian men style. I stepped out of my comfort zone and accessorized more than usual without losing the concept. Think boyfriend clothes meets date night. Hope you all enjoy this look as much as I did.:)
As always, the details for my look is provided below (after the pictures). You would be surprise how easily accesibles these pieces were for purchase. Enjoy Loves 🙂
Shirt- H&M Women:
This button up shirt has become a staple piece in my closet this summer. What I love the most about it is that I am able to mix it and match it with different pant bottoms as well as skirts and shorts.
Boyfriend Jeans- Garage:
These Jeans are very comfy and currently trending. Prior to the summer season I went on a hunt for the perfect boyfriend jeans, only to be shit out of luck. Luckily for me I found these and purchased them in two different denim washes. I would recommend going a size bigger to give it that loose fitted style.
Heels: Call it Spring:
These are a 3 inch wedge heel that give a twist to the normal booties. The cut out on it allows you to bring the look right into fall, and might I add they are comfy as hell. I wore them for 6 hours straight with no issues this past week.
What can I say, I caved in to the choker trend. I honestly am quite content with this choker. Just the other day I was able to come up with four different ways to wear this accessory.
Have you ever wanted to just look at someone and ask them how they got so self entailed for so long? I have always believed that people will go as far as you let them. If you don’t believe me look around study some people in your life and how they move and act toward you.
The concept of saying no can sometime be difficult because many of us are faced with guilt and and fear afterwards. These feeling can sometime affect your family life, your work and professional life and even your personal life. If that becomes the case, we need to take a step back and reevaluate our decision making. When you think about it, we become so consumed with other people’s needs, likes, hobbies, schedule , you forget to fill your schedule with things you really need to do to benefit you and your future. NOW I’m not saying you should go around and be a complete A-Hole to those around you. By no means do I want you to give out No’s like Oprah gave out cars in her talk show (back in the days). But I do think you should ask yourself why you are always so quick to say yes in the first place. The answer could be that you don’t have a lot of things in your life keeping you busy, or maybe you haven’t really invested in some of your own interest. Whatever the reason might be, it is always important to look into your life and see what you need to be doing before you can commit to something you might regard later.
If saying no is something you are not ready to do or comfortable with, don’t you worry your little soul out. I have crafted my five approaches I use when I need to say now without actually Using N.O.
Check out the list below and let me know what your thoughts are on it.
As always have a great rest of the week everyone :).
Five Approaches to “How To Say No…Without Saying No”
Make your availability less available.
Find things that interest you (could be that you simply don’t have your own hobbies)
Offer a date and time that is convenient to you. ( Take control of your time and schedule)
Offer an alternative way to complete the task without you being a part of it.
